Upload Registration Form
Program registration takes place each spring for the upcoming school year. Students currently enrolled as Learning Centre participants and students enrolled in other components of the program since September may apply to re-enroll during the Early Registration phase of the application process. Rising Kindergarten siblings of these students may also apply at that time. Other applicants are then considered during the Regular Registration phase as capacity permits.
Enrollment in the program is offered if it is determined that the program is a good match for the applicant and his/her family, and if there is sufficient enrollment capacity in the program.
The program is considered to be an appropriate match for an applicant if the educational philosophy and expectations of the family are congruent with the program design, if the program can effectively meet the needs of the student, and if the child and family can fulfill the partnership requirements of the program.
Ask a Planning Council member if you wish to review the complete Registration Policy.
Classroom Program
This unique program combines home-based learning and learning in the wider community with a centre-based, teacher-led, parent-involved classroom program. Together these elements provide a supportive, enriched and flexible learning community for our children (and our families). Learning in math, literacy, science and art as well as in-depth project work and group skill development grounds the learning experience at the Centre. Students are also involved in monthly fieldtrips that build on their Centre-based learning. Outside the Centre time families support their children in building on these areas of learning as well as pursuing individual interests and passions at home and in the wider community.
It is not the goal or responsibility of the teachers in this program to teach the entire BC Curriculum to the children. Many rich learning opportunities are offered that are drawn from the BC curriculum and connect with the children’s interests. Parents take responsibility for the remainder of the learning experiences of the child (and associated basic documentation for activity outside the centre.) The majority of our students are registered as classroom participants.
Full-Time Home Learner (DE)
This component provides support for families that do not want Centre based activity, and/or want even greater flexibility in their learning experiences. Teachers meet with students and their families each month and provide some phone and e-mail support through sharing ideas, suggestions and helping find resources. Families keep records (in a format discussed with the teacher) and portfolios of work and receive an allotment from the district for educational spending.
Local FTHL families are welcomed to participate in our learning community by taking part in most workshops and field trips. Parents of FTHL students may also wish to make a contribution by taking on a specific parent job.
